About the Web of Dysautonomia
Unlocking the mysteries of dysautonomia begins here. I have committed decades trying to find the answers to what seemed like random unconnected symptoms that started for me in 1st grade. Now, in my 50s, I have finally gotten diagnosed and have learned some treatments that have improved these symptoms.
What is Dysautonomia
Dysautonomia is also known as Autonomic Dysfunction or Autonomic Neuropathy. It is when the nerves that control the actions of the body’s involuntary systems such as circulatory or digestive are not properly working. These nerves web together the functions of all the body’s systems to form a complete circuit. If one area of the web is damaged or irritated then a ripple effect flows through the web. A break in the web causes the surrounding areas to be put under more tension to hold the body together making them more liable to break. Other areas further down the line may just have minor disturbances that fluctuate.
Some Symptoms Include:
- Blood Pooling in the body
- Irregular heartbeat or heart palpitations
- Irregular changes in blood pressure or consistently high or low blood pressure
- Dizziness or vertigo
- Fainting or Syncope
- Body Temperature dysregulation
- Exercise Intolerance
- Brain Fog
- Feelings of anxiety or adrenaline dumps
- And more symptons that may seem to have no known source for why they are happening
Testing, Questionnaires, and Journals
I have compiled a list of tests and questionnaires I have taken over decades of searching for answers. I also created my own questionnaire to give to doctors because there seemed to be a slight disconnect between the standard forms created by the person making it and me who lives with dysautonomia. This information along with journals helped me be prepared for medical appointments and help find answers with my medical team. I can’t diagnose or give treatment advice since I am not a doctor but do try to give my doctors as much information as I can in a organized and easy to follow way.
Unraveling the Language of Dysautonomia
Dysautonomia can be daunting, filled with complex medical terminology. I created a comprehensive glossary of terms I often come across so I had it for easy reference.
